Kiln (2026)
A Multi Party Pottery Brawler by DoubleFine Productions.
Project Lead/Art Lead Derek Brand; Environment Art Lead Jeremy French; Character Art Lead Jared Mills.
Kiln was my first foray into video games alongside a smaller team at DoubleFine Productions.
It was a great creative experience where I was tasked with a variety of different assignments; a selection of which is shown below.
Slip & Slip’s Shop
Top Left (moving Clockwise): 1st pass focusing on the visual relationship between Slip and Celadon (Blue warrior Goddess, painted and designed by Nathan “Bagel” Stapley); 2nd pass focusing on niche items Slip would wear while also pushing the stylization to fit the game; 3rd pass focusing on hair and vibe check; and 4th pass focusing on posing and surface material for his coat.
I spent the last leg of the project focused solely on pot decorations. Here are some of my favorite sticker sheets — including the very first pass on what decorations could look like.
Kiln’s Kiln
Designing One of the Game’s Key Assets
Redesigning the Kiln fell into my lap when we had to put together a rough game play trailer as a proof of concept. Leads liked the direction so much that it ended up getting shipped.
Based on the notes at launch, I started exploring designs that felt tied to an ancient civilization and had a handmade-feel.
After finalizing design, the task continued to discover how the Kiln might react in different stages of health for the VFX team.
Building on the story of creativity, space confetti, and the Universe for the Kiln’s Interior for both the Lobby Kiln and Match Kiln.
